Chapter Four
Ren
Three Weeks Later
Graduation Day
I watch as my best friend gives her Valedictorian speech. Sheâs been weird lately, but thatâs probably because she knows Iâve been sleeping with her brother every night for three weeks. I look down at the ring on my finger. We are getting married next week. I didnât want a long engagement because I canât wait to be his wife. He told me about the house heâs building for us, and all the money and gift cards made sense. Apparently, everyone knew he loved me but me, but everyone also knew that I loved him. They left us in the dark on purpose. They had bets going on it. No one won, so they gave us the money.
âRemember, Class of 2022, life is just beginning. High school is over, but it's our time to shine. Let us go forth and show the world that the Windermere Wildcats are made of.â People applaud her, and of course, I join in. Then they start passing out diplomas. Iâm graduating with honors, so my name is called fairly quickly, not that it wouldnât have been either way. There are only one hundred and fifty seniors graduating today.
âKerenza Rose Porter,â Principal Jones says as I cross the stage to her. She flips my tassel and shakes my hand as we take a picture. âCongratulations, Ren,â she says. I hug her and walk off the stage.
I did it. High school is finally over, and Avaline was right. Life is just beginning. After the ceremony, I make my way over to my family.
âYou did it, baby,â Aaron says, lifting me up and spinning me around. He slowly lets me down, my front sliding down his suggestively. âAre you going to any parties?â
âHell no. I want to spend the night with Avaline just like we always planned to do.â She comes over to me and hugs me.
âWe did it, Ren.â
âWe did!â I shout.
âAbout tonightâ¦â she begins.
âI made seven-layer dip,â I tell her.
âShit. Ren, I canât hang out tonight.â Her birthday was last week, so we should be partying.
âOh, okay,â I reply, disappointed.
âSomethingâs come up, and I promise Iâll tell you all about it when I get back next week.â
âBack? Where are you going?â
âItâs not important right now.â
âBe safe,â I tell her because I know that once sheâs made up her mind, there is no changing it.
âI will,â she says, and sheâs gone.
My parents take the rest of us out to dinner. The only people not present are Beckett and Avaline. I canât help but wonder what is going on there because Beckett would never turn down free food.
After dinner, Aaron takes me to the Resurgence Hotel in Tallahassee. Itâs the nicest hotel for hundreds of miles. And so expensive. I tried to protest, telling him the Windermere Motor Lodge would have been fine, but he insisted. He got us a room to celebrate in private. Iâm barely out of my shoes when he picks me up and carries me to the bathroom.
âWhat are you doing?â I ask, giggling as he peels my black dress from my body.
